Who really care’s about pencil cases? Well, I am always struck by the grace and purpose shown by samurai in those old movies when they draw their sword. That one deliberate action foretells so much.
The creative process is so precious that artists, both unconsciously an consciously build routine and triggers into their process. To protect it, to guide, but mostly in an effort to get in to that zone. That place where time is irrelevant and making art becomes inevitable.
Those are the things I think about when drawing a fine pencil out of a pencil case. Quality, purpose, routine, and a sense of presence. A trigger – a beginning of what is to follow. Sometimes those creative sessions are epic, and sometimes merely mediocre, but I’m going to prep for epic because creative sessions are too valuable to do anything less and I’m optimistic that way:)

What is the Best Pencil Case?
So process aside, I did promise to talk about the best pencil case. Which is ours, of course:) No bells or whistles or blinking LED’s, very clean and basic. But here’s why we like it:
Now a pencil case could be a shoe box, container, or large bag that can store pencils along with sharpeners, erasers, rulers, scissors, glue sticks, gum, and a ton of other things. When I was growing up we had a kitchen drawer that did the same thing. We called it a junk drawer. It usually took me about 5 minutes to find anything in there.
I love sketching everyday and everywhere. But it’s not always easy. To make something a consistent routine you need to be purposeful and deliberate in your actions. If you have to dig around for your sketching supplies every time you draw, your daily sketching habit is going to quickly turn into a only every once and while habit. Even small friction points add up.
You need to remove these friction points, even little ones to build a solid creative habit.

Of course, each artist is going to have their own unique likes, dislikes, fetishes, and irritations that they’re working with (or against:) But the fact is the more friction you can remove from the on ramp, the more likely you will be able to form a solid routine of sketching regularly. Keeping your stuff together, streamlining it so your not carrying around a suit case of gear, these little habits help remove some of that friction.

Leather lasts forever. Though it is a rare artist who wears out even a canvas art supply case. The thing is, quality begets quality. Just as you are an average of your five best friends, using quality materials is a small trigger to producing quality work.
And there is something about the smell of leather. I admit, I cant open up my personal drawing mechanical pencil set and case with out taking a second to breathe in that wonderful smell of leather. I don’t know why that’s so powerful, but now that is a part of my process, I’ll never give it up.
