Why 2mm mechanical pencils?
2mm pencil leads (thick lead) are used because of their versatility for shading, blending, and textural effects. This kit comes with an emery board (basically a nail file) which lets you put a long point on your leads. The sharp end makes for ultra fine lines (especially the 4h grade), and the broad angle of the lead (held at 45 degrees to near flat) makes for interesting gradations and textural effects.
Is a 2mm mechanical pencil better than the a .5mm mechanical pencil for art?
No. They are both good, depending on the finished look you want. .5mm pencils are great for "line art". This is where the lines are distinctive and have a strong illustration quality. Value is frequently achieved through hatching and spacing between parallel lines (much like pen and ink).
2mm is more common for highly rendered sketches where the lines are made almost invisible through shading and careful application of the graphite.
Why is the graphite being called lead? I thought lead was poisonous...
Lead has multiple definitions. In the "pencil lead" context it refers to graphite/clay based lead for mark making. You are correct that pencil lead does not contain the metal element #82
Is the case real leather?
Yes. Both the case and the inside suede are real leather. Beware that cases marked as "vegan leather" or pleather are basically a petroleum by product. Most commonly made from PVC or polyurethane (plastic compounds made up of imperishable toxic chemicals) and will degrade quickly. Ironically "vegan leather" is not environmentally friendly where as real leather ages in terms of decades even centuries compared to the short life span of a pleather product.
